All three of us wore our “Zeeland” t-shirts to represent the three Zeelands in our life. Our father is from the province of Zeeland, in the Netherlands. And of course, New Zealand is named after that province, with a slight anglicization with the “a” instead of double-e. Finally, there is the town of Zeeland in West Michigan, where my brother works and to represent home in some way. “Ik bin glad weg van Zeeland” means, roughly translated, “I’m totally in awe of Zeeland” and “I am away from Zeeland” (trust me, it’s a pun that works better in Zeeuwse Dutch). We were also all wearing thermal socks from our Opa who passed away this past June, to represent him in spirit. … We met a nice couple named Mattie and Christine. Mattie was originally from South Africa, Christine from Canada. Mattie kindly snapped this photo for us to commemorate our hike and these things that are special to us.
